This study examines the implementation and success of five different Child Protection Services mediation programs in counties around Texas during 2001. Survey data was collected from judges, mediators, staff and mediation participants to determine the settlement rate and satisfaction of those involved in the program. Researchers collected 436 mediator reports forms and 1,890 mediation participant report forms, involving approximately 278 cases. As compared to a similar evaluation done in 2000, the survey found that the number of cases sent to mediation had increased significantly in 2001. In addition, 71% of mediated cases reached settlements, up five percent from 2000. As for satisfaction levels, 90% of participants reported that they were satisfied with the mediation process. The study concluded that "the CJA mediation projects have established that the use of mediation is an effective tool for resolving CPS cases. Continued use of mediation will provide benefits to the regulatory and judicial system, and to the families and children who are involved in those systems" (p. 32).
