The Maryland Program for Mediator Excellence provides services for mediators in the state to help them develop their mediation skills. These services include continuing education classes and training programs, a skills-based mentoring program and networking groups. The MPME also has an evaluation group to develop tools for evaluating the "quality of mediation across the state," as well as a personal assessment group that develops tools for mediators to assess their performance individually. The MPME's Mediation Ombuds Program provides a grievance system for consumers of mediation to resolve any "issues, concerns and complaints" they may have with their mediators.
The MPME is governed by the Mediation Excellence Council, which is made up of representatives of the bar association and other state dispute resolution associations, as well as the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office. In order to be a member of MPME, a mediator must complete 40 hours of mediation training, agree to comply with the Maryland Standards of Conduct for Mediators, agree to participate in good faith with the Mediation Ombuds Program and complete five continuing skills improvement activities each year.
