In 2009, the Dispute Resolution Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan conducted a study in cooperation with the State Court Administrative Office of Michigan to analyze "diversity trainings at community mediation centers across the country" (p.2). The study sought to identify best practices and curricula for trainings as well as gather information regarding awareness of diversity issues. The study examined 297 community centers throughout the country and received 44 responses from centers in Michigan, California, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, Missouri, Virginia and Washington. According to this report, of those centers, 20 had offered diversity training to mediators, 15 to board or staff and 10 to other organizations. Respondents were also asked questions about training curriculum, community multi-cultural needs assessments and non-English speaking mediators, among other topics. The report provides lessons learned and recommendations based on the study's findings.
